From Airman to: CRAFTSMAN FATHER DESIGNER MAKER VETERAN HUSBAND
The Maker
Welcome to Cuervo Viejo Studio! I'm Hector, the proud owner of this unique leathercraft studio. My journey is one of transformation and resilience, deeply rooted in my experiences as an Air Force veteran, a graphic designer, husband and a father.
My Background
I served in the Air Force from 2003 to 2006, an experience that instilled in me values of dedication and service. After my service, I explored many trades and vocations. I graduated Summa Cum Laude from design school in 2015 and embarked on a career as a freelance graphic designer, specializing in 2D animation, data visualization and new media design.
The Turning Point
In the fall of 2021, my daughter was born, a moment that radically changed my life. Struggling with alcoholism, I had lost my passion for design. My sobriety journey began on December 1, 2021, marking a new chapter in my life. The process of recovery reignited my creative spark and led me back to my roots in design.
The Birth of Cuervo Viejo Studio
During my recovery, I invested in a laser cutter/engraver and began experimenting with various materials. I found a profound connection with leather, a premium material often discarded by the food industry. This concept of turning "trash to treasure" resonated deeply with me, embodying the beauty of recovery. Just as raw leather is transformed into a beautiful and functional product through careful crafting, overcoming addiction is a process of transformation that requires dedication and patience.
